Electrical Repairs and Improvements for Handymen and
DIY Enthusiasts
A weekend course (Sat/Sun) intended to cover
aspects of electrical work that do not need to be Part P certified.
This would cover a great many of the tasks that the self employed
handyman, builder, plumber, plasterer etc. might undertake
where they know they will be limiting themselves to minor
work only; i.e. not doing rewires, not adding complete new
circuits, not changing consumer units etc.
Course content:
What is electricity
Understanding electrical terms – volt, amp, resistance,
power
Choosing the correct fuses
Safe isolation of electrical supplies
Extending power circuits
Replacing damaged sockets, switches and cables
Replacing damaged plug tops
Ring circuits, radial circuits and spurs
Adding sockets to rooms
Fitting outside lights
Changing lighting luminaires
Changing ceiling roses
Converting 1 way lighting circuits to 2 and 3 way lighting
Removing 2 and 3 way lighting circuits
Inspecting and testing of work completed
Part P, Building Regulations and legal limitations of the
course

Fault Finding and Improvement Skills for Part P Tradesmen
A weekend course (Sat/Sun) intended for
those persons that have already completed a Part P course.
It will concentrate heavily on practical skills and will include
advanced techniques for fault finding in a variety of common
domestic scenarios. These will include numerous faults, wiring
errors and defects on the following circuits:
Ring circuits
Radial socket circuits
Lighting circuits
Ceiling roses
Switch faults
1 way, 2 way and 3 way lighting defects
Multiple lighting point problems
ELV lighting faults
Power circuit problems
Bonding problems
The delegates will be expected to demonstrate
correct safe working procedures, identify the faults, rectify
or replace as necessary and to test to the appropriate standards
correctly.
There will also be a necessary section on
recent changes to the Building Regulations as they affect
Part P and how the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations have affected
electrical work.
